Diva iOS & Android Mobile App
This Mobile application is a genuine life-saving digital product. Each year, millions of people die from medical errors. It is the third-leading cause of death in the USA. A significant factor in this is medication errors. Currently there is no connectivity between different hospital systems containing patient medical records. There are various providers of Electronic Health Records that do not communicate to each other. When a patient presents at a new hospital or GP practice, the Nurse, Doctor and Pharmacist have no access to their previous health records and have to ask patients (who may not be able to answer) or conduct a medical records search and access request.

The Problem
The current med-rec process used in hospitals causes issues for both the patient being treated and the medical staff tasked with gathering the medication list. Patients often found their medical records were not up to date and were frustrated with hospitals not sharing their medicine details amongst each other.
The Target Audience
DIVAs primary target audience are patients and hospital staff. The patients would include anyone who is on numerous medications and tasked with tracking these medications. The medical staff would include nurses, doctors and pharmacists working in hospital environments responsible for the patient’s primary care.
Discovery Phase
During the early stages of the design process, Armour identified the key users of the app with the 4 primary cases being the patient, nurse, pharmacist and doctor. We conducted 1 hour interviews with 3 users from each group – this allowed us to ensure that the app would be tailored to their individual needs.
Product Testing
During the early stages of the design process, Armour relied heavily on DIVA technologies to utilise their many contacts in the healthcare industry to get suitable candidates for users interviews and later on for usability testing. This allowed for Armour to collect feedback early on the proof of concept.
Prototyping
DIVA’s UI was crafted by the designers in Armour after an extensive user experience process. Time and care was given to all stages of the process from initial pen on paper sketch to the high fidelity wireframes which were tested with potential users of the app. The final User Interface utilises the best practices in user interface design to present the DIVAs users with a highly usable and accessible app.
For our interactive design practices, we aimed to keep our UI controls as consistent and as predictable as possible. We removed as much of the ‘technical medical jargon’ and used simplified text to speak the end users language. The app was designed with the user in mind and through this, it works to guide them through the med-rec process. The process of reviewing medicines is done in a sequential order to insure it can be completed by different app users of different technical proficiency levels. We validated our interactive design decisions through extensive user and usability testing.
User Interface Design
The UI uses a green colour scheme through to be consistent with the DIVA technologies brand guidelines. The user interface is primarily centered around the home screen which contains the patient medicines. Other screens lead into the review process and the hospital onboarding.
While the app was in development, DIVA technologies also tasked Armour with the job of revising DIVA’s branding. This included a new logo, colour scheme and brand guidelines. DIVA technologies brought their concept to med tech shows based in the United States to show off the proof of concept and gain some market traction. Videos showcasing and explaining DIVA’s potential were also produced to be sent and shown to potential investors as needed.
The Result
DIVA was built with solving the current problems in Med-Rec process in mind. The DIVA system bridges the gap between systems. It allows the App users access to their Medication Records at all times. They can add off-the-shelf medications into their medication records by scanning a barcode. This information is pulled from the Drugs@FDA (managed by the Federal Drug Administration in the USA) and sorted within the App. They can also be issued prescriptions, instructions and reminders through the App. So when they present themselves at their next hospital or GP appointment this live data can be accessed through the hospital EHR system. The DIVA App is currently in clinical trials in 400 hospitals across the USA at the minute. DIVA Technologies are in discussions with the HSE and the NHS for trials in Ireland and the UK.
